Marshalltown prom rescheduled for May

Prom has always been an event eagerly looked forward to by high school students. It is when they can dress in formal attire, listen to music, eat food with friends and dance until the late hours of the night.

Prom at Marshalltown High School was scheduled for April 25 but the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed it back. However, students and staff are not giving up on it.

Preparations began months ago for prom in Marshalltown and preparations are still being made.

The prom committee decided on decorations. Students ordered dresses and tuxes and got up the nerve to ask classmates to prom.

With school closing, all of this was put in uncertainty. Luckily for MHS students, prom has been rescheduled from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on May 23.

According to Associate Principal Justin Boliver, prom will be held in the MHS auxiliary gym.

The theme is the Roaring 20’s and local DJ Samuel Ibarra will provide music for the third year in a row.

Boliver hopes this news will instill hope for students during this uncertain time.

He said no money has been lost with the rescheduling.

“This year’s prom committee has invested a lot of time and thought into reusable decorations and set up materials that we can use for years to come,” he said.

There may be some precautions in place depending on the state of the pandemic at the end of May. Boliver said they have not determined whether there will be rules for students concerning distancing.

While this is hopeful news for students, there cannot be total certainty at this time. Boliver said the plans are dependent on Gov. Kim Reynolds and district decisions, as it may still be recommended to continue social distancing.

He wants students to know that staff are hoping to get back to school.

“We all miss our students and miss the hustle, bustle and laughter in the halls of MHS!” Boliver said.
