Part of former fire station donated to Marshall County

The former fire station owners, Dave and Kathy Thompson, donated the north half of the building to Marshall County. The donation was out of appreciation to the residents of Marshall County for 36 years of support of their family business — Thompson True Value.

The north half of the Marshalltown’s former fire station is being given to Marshall County.

The new owners Kathy and Dave Thompson bought the station in an auction for $172,000. They plan to covert it into a multi-use facility, including business inventory and storage.

“As a county supervisor, I have seen firsthand how our ever-growing needs have outpaced the limited space of the courthouse,” Dave said. “This donation is a token of our appreciation to the people of Marshall County for the 36 years of support and patronage of our family business.”

The Thompsons plan to make the building’s office space available for rent to local businesses.

The property, located at 109 South First Ave. and 8 East Linn St., was auctioned off by Van Metre using an online meeting application.

The building was vacant since the Marshalltown Police and Fire Building opened in August 2019.

“Our belief in the future of downtown Marshalltown is why we decided to rebuild here,” the Thompsons said. “We look forward to continuing as a partner in the rejuvenating the heart of our community, Marshalltown’s downtown district.”
