Not all area events have been canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, Appleberry Farm hosted Sweet Corn Days Saturday and Sunday, providing family fun and tasty treats for Marshalltown residents. Attendees picked from sweet corn, caramel apples, slushies, breads and many other wares out in the sun.
Activities included browsing products from a handful of vendors, taking a horse ride and testing one's throw with a dunk tank.
Kelly Mason, owner of the farm, said business has picked up at the farm since they got their sweet corn and tomatoes. After an initial dip in business in the spring, the number of customers has gone back to normal.
"We haven't really noticed a lot of change in our business," Mason said. "A lot of our stuff is outdoors and it's not a very busy place. I don't think people feel threatened by coming in here."
She said part of the reason they host Sweet Corn Days is to promote the sweet corn they grow. Mason also just wants to provide a fun space for families to enjoy.
"We want to share our Appleberry Farm with the community and we want to have something fun for families to do," she said. "I know people are afraid of being in big groups right now, but we're outdoors. You can spread out."
Appleberry Farm offers a fun way to get out while still maintaining social distancing. It is open year round and offers produce, a shop full of decorative items and sweet treats like caramel apples and doughnuts.
"Have some fun, get out, enjoy the peacefulness out here," Mason said.
