Iowa Veterans Homes is COVID-19 free

T-R File photo The Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown became COVID-19 free. It was taken off of the Long Term Care Outbreak list on the Iowa Department of Public Health website.

Marshalltown does not have any long-term care outbreaks anymore.

The Iowa Veterans Home has been removed from the Long Term Care Outbreak list from the Iowa Department of Public Health website.

Previously, Grandview Heights in Marshalltown had an outbreak of 81 positive cases and the Veterans Home had 14 cases. Both homes have been removed from the outbreak list.

This was the Veterans Home second time on the list.

IVH has now gone 28 days without a positive COVID-19 test.

“The staff is going great at keeping the COVID out of here,” IVH Commandant Timon Oujiri said.

The community and staff have made a huge difference in keeping the pandemic at bay.

Statistically a retirement facility the size of the Iowa Veterans Home could be a hot spot for the pandemic, but it has remained at bay as precautions were taken early.

Almost six months ago the Veterans Home stopped allowing visitors because of the pandemic.

“Overall the residents are doing well,” Oujiri said. “The staff is fantastic.”
