Almost 10,000 Marshall County votes cast

Only one more week before the general election on Nov. 3, and almost 10,000 ballots have been cast absentee or early in Marshall County.

Auditor Nan Benson said 9,988 ballots, or 85 percent of those requested, have been turned in.

“We have a really high return rate,” she said.

Marshall County residents can still vote early at the former fire station, 109 S. First Ave., from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday; and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Monday.

Plus, Benson is expecting a high number of people to turn up on Election Day.

“I have heard of a lot of folks who have requested ballots and then changed their minds,” she said.

Benson said election workers will begin reconciling the absentee and early ballots on Oct. 31. The envelopes will be sliced open and ballots separated on Monday, but counting those votes will not begin until Nov. 3.

“I want to get to the point where the ballots can be laid out flat on Nov. 2 and placed overnight in the secure room so they can be fed through the machine nicely,” Benson said.

The results of the absentee and early votes will not be made public until after the polls close at 9 p.m. on Nov. 3.

When residents show up on Election Day, Benson said it is very important identification is brought with them. Some examples are a driver’s license, a passport or a military ID. She said masks are recommended, but not required.

Benson also has no reason to think election results in Marshall County will not be available that night.

“The machine is really fast and accurate,” she said.

The Marshall County Auditor’s office will post results of the election on the Iowa Secretary of State website first — sos.iowa.gov — and on the county website afterward — https://elections.marshallcountyia.gov.
