Residents escape Sunday morning fire

On Sunday morning, at 5:02 a.m., the Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD) responded with Marshalltown Police Department (MPD) and UnityPoint EMS to 719 N. 4th Ave on a reported house fire. On arrival, smoke was visible coming from the front of the structure. Residents were home at the time of the fire and out of the structure.

Fire crews experienced some difficulty gaining access to the structure, but located the fire in the basement. Crews advanced two hoselines and achieved an initial extinguishment of the fire.

During overhaul, more fire was found in the floor cavity and wall and was extinguished. No injuries were reported and damage is estimated at $4,000. Investigation found the cause of the fire to be ignition of combustible material located to close to a wood burning stove.
