Jeff Roads, previously of Marshalltown, was sentenced to 324 months in federal prison on Wednesday.
Appearing in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa Central Division before U.S. District Judge Stephanie Rose, he received the sentence for two counts of possession and transportation of child pornography.
Roads was placed in the custody of the United States Marshal and will serve his time at either the minimum-security Federal Correction Institution (FCI) Yankton in Yankton, S.D., or low-security FCI Sandstone in Sandstone, Minn.
Upon his release, he will be under eight years of supervised probation. During that time, he must make $60,000 restitution, cooperate with DNA collection, register for the sex offender list no matter where he resides and maintain full-time employment.
Special conditions of Roads probation include:
• He must stay away from areas where there are people under 18 years of age.
• No contact with any person under 18.
• No contact with victims.
• No possession of any cameras or sexually explicit content.
• No accessing the internet without permission.
• A submission to a mental health evaluation and necessary treatment.
• Submission to polygraph exams if ordered by his probation officer.
• He must abstain from alcohol.
• Submission to searches of his property if his probation officer has suspicions of restricted activity.
Roads, 46, was arrested in January 2019 for a charge of transportation of child pornography. FBI Special Agent Chris Thomas began investigating Roads after an Oklahoma minor accused Roads of molestation and showing them a sexually explicit video. A federal search warrant was issued and executed by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and several electronic devices, including an iPhone, were confiscated from Roads' home.
On the phone, the agent found 198,000 images -- 100 of which contained child pornography. Some of the images included adults performing sexual acts on children, some as young as 2 or 3.
Roads was employed by the City of Marshalltown as a street superintendent.
