UnityPoint Health administration hopes its new clinic coming to Marshalltown will provide greater access for patients.
Construction on the new clinic started earlier in March on South Center Street near the Meadow Lane Mall. A crew from Huff Contracting, based in Waterloo, began breaking up concrete to prepare for foundational work.
The building will be about 4,000 square feet. It will house five exam suites and a registration area.
Luke Kroeger, regional director of community health, said the location was chosen as a prime spot for several reasons.
"With our Express Clinics we look to be located in an area where there's lots of traffic and retail business," Kroeger said. "We want to be a bit more convenient and accessible. We also look at what transportation options are available to make it easier for people to get in and out."
With the Express Clinic the goal is for people to get in and out in 30 minutes or less, according to Kroeger.
The clinic will be open daily, including weekends and holidays, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
The services provided will mostly be identical to the Express Clinic in the south campus.
"We treat really most any non-emergency conditions. We'll be able to treat a cold, sore throat, injuries, any sports physicals, flu shot and some injury treatments," Kroeger said. "Other services we'll have include point of care lab testing. Also we'll have an X-ray unit on site so we can do most images needed."
There will be a variety of medications which can be dispensed on site as well so patients may not need to visit a pharmacy directly after their appointments.
The staff at the clinic will include one provider and three clinical care attendants which are either nurses or radiology technicians. The attendants do things like register patients for exams, take vitals and administer injections.
Kroeger said the expectation is for existing staff to be used for the clinic.
It is too early in the construction process to forecast a firm move in and opening date at the new clinic. The hope is to be up and running by the end of the year.
"It will depend on how the next few months go with construction," Kroeger said. "We'll continue to share updates as we know more. As we get a month or two down the road we'll get a better idea of a planned opening date. We're excited to move into that space."
