Authorities ID trooper killed in Grundy Center

During a 2:30 p.m. press conference Saturday, Iowa State Patrol authorities said Sgt. Jim Smith, was killed Friday night in Grundy Center during a five-hour standoff.

He was attempting to arrest a driver, Michael Thomas Lane, 41, who led law enforcement on a high speed chase and then barricaded himself inside a Grundy Center residence.

Prior to barricading, Lane also assaulted a Grundy Center police officer who chased him, and told the officer to shoot him.

After shooting Smith, law enforcement saw Lane holding a black, pump-action shot gun, before he barricaded himself. He fired numerous rounds at law enforcement who responded, and Lane was shot multiple times. Lane is in custody and is at the University of Iowa hospital in critical condition. He is charged with first-degree murder.

Law enforcement agencies involved in the situation included the Iowa State Patrol, Hardin County, Grundy Center and Cedar Falls law enforcement officers.
