Live music returns to Grimes

CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS — Several bands will be playing this summer and into fall at the GrimesFarm and Conservation Center. Cedar Country Cobras will perform on Aug. 19.

Live music and food trucks return to the Leonard Grimes Memorial Amphitheater this summer at the Grimes Farm.

The Friends of Marshall County Conservation will offer the free 2021 Live and Local Concert Series at the amphitheater on Grimes Farm 2349 233rd St.

Food trucks such as Scratch Cupcake, Claire’s Tenderloin, Pie Lady and Flying Elbow, will be there to supply supper. However, participants can bring their own beverages and lawn chairs.

In case of rain, concerts will be moved to the Central Iowa Fairgrounds, except for the July 15 concert. Announcements will be made on radio stations, KDAO, KFJB and KXIA, Friends of Marshall County Facebook and Marshall County Conservation Facebook pages and FMMC email listing.

Neil Hewitt will perform on July 15.

The concerts, which will begin at 5:30 p.m., are:

• June 24: Billy Wilson, which will be virtual. Being heavily influenced by the music of Riverdance, Wilson presents a program that will feature Irish music, history and humor. Several songs from Riverdance will be featured which include the traditional Irish Tin Whistles.

• July 15: Neil Hewitt. Country artist and songwriter Hewitt is the rare performer who can appeal to all ages. He plays a great variety of his own music, country classics and modern hits. Neil is native of Nevada and is a favorite performer of Iowa and the midwest.

• Aug. 19: Cedar County Cobras. This group plays American roots and blues music from the last century. The music takes on an “old time” blues feel. All members of the project are multi-instrumentalists and play a number of different instruments.

• Sept. 23: DSM Dueling Fiddles. Comprised of violinists Geneviève Salamone and Hanna Wolle, the Dueling Fiddles are an entertainment duo that mix the rich sounds of the violin with layered accompaniment for energetic and engaging performances. This Des Moines-based duo performs a wide range of repertoire, ranging from Celtic Rock to modern pop favorites that audiences of all ages will enjoy.

Bob Dorr will perform on Oct. 6.

• Oct. 6: Bob Dorr. A favorite of FMCC, Jeff Petersen on guitar and vocals and Bob Dorr playing drums, harmonica and vocals are inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame. Their song list comes from 38 years of playing music together. Jokes and laughter are a mainstay of each performance.
