Corey Brown Memorial 5k Fun Run & Walk set

For the third year in a row, the Corey Brown Memorial 5K Fun Run & Walk will take place. The event is to honor the memory of Corey Brown, who died on Jan. 27, 2019, at the age of 13.

Since then Marshalltown has rallied around his name and kind nature.

There have been multiple memorials and events dedicated to Corey’s memory, including a bowling tournament, a virtual fun run, benches named after him, as well as the Corey Puppy Park at the Animal Rescue League.

This year’s 5K will be held at Riverside Cemetery, 611 N. Center St., on Aug. 1. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m.

The run will start and end on the Riverside Cemetery Campus, and will honor Corey’s love of running. A 5K is something he wanted to do with his mother Michelle.

People can register for the 5K 15 minutes before their start time, or by pre-registering by mailing a form to Corey’s 5K Run c/o Maggie Stalzer, 2907 Newby Ave., Haverhill, IA, 50120,

The fundraiser proceeds will go to the Riverside Cemetery to help pay for derecho damages. Dave’s Coffee Cakes will also be present.

Andrew Potter, the tourism director for the Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce, said he will run in the memorial run again this year.

“It’s a great thing to bring the community together and honor Corey. I’ve participated in the past and look forward to running again, since it’s such a positive event,” he said.
