Marshalltown man convicted of murder

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - Robert J. Thomas, 37, has been found guilty of first degree murder and attempted murder.

A Marshalltown man was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder Tuesday after being charged in a 2020 shooting that left one man dead and one seriously injured.

Robert J. Thomas, 37, declined a jury trial so the verdict was issued by a district court judge at the temporary courtroom at the Orpheum Theater.

Thomas killed 22-year-old Johnqwez Deanthony Lewis and seriously injured 27-year-old Devonte Brooks on March 25, 2020 outside of a home in north Marshalltown.

Marshall County District Court Judge John Haney said witness accounts that Thomas admitted to the crimes were credible and ultimately contributed to the conviction.
