ARL’s ‘Howl-O-Ween’ dog costume party

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The Marshalltown Animal Rescue League is planning their first ever dog costume party on Oct. 17.

Furry friends and family members will get a chance to wear costumes and trick-or-treat this Halloween season in Marshalltown.

The Marshalltown Animal Rescue League is throwing a “Howl-O-Ween” dog costume party from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 17 at the Reunion Hall in Riverview Park. The event is free to attend, but for $10 you can enter your dog in the costume contest to compete for four top prizes valued at $100 each.

Local businesses and organizations will have tables set up handing out their own treats and candies, so both dogs and kids alike can trick-or-treat. The entire community is welcome at the event. Even those without dogs can come watch the contest and participate in other activities.

Dogs can also participate in apple bobbing and photographers will be on-site to take professional pet photos.

Marshalltown Animal Rescue League volunteer coordinator Jessica Slifer said this is the first event of its kind that they have hosted

“Part of my job is to come up with different kinds of community outreach ideas,” Slifer said. “Halloween is my favorite holiday and I really wanted to try to do something fun.”

She said she is most looking forward to seeing what the community comes up with for their dog costumes. While the Marshalltown Animal Rescue League isn’t entering any of its dogs from the shelter in the costume contest, they will dress some of their animals up in costumes throughout the month of October and showcase them on Facebook.

Dogs attending the event will need to be current on all of their vaccinations and must be kept on a leash at all times.
