Scooter’s coming to Meadow Lane Mall late this year

A fresh option for those in need of a morning or mid-afternoon pick-me-up is coming to the Meadow Lane Mall in Marshalltown.

Scooter’s Coffee is opening a new location at 1708 S. Center Street. Construction of the new building started in early October.

Stan Eilers, owner of three Scooter’s locations in Cedar Rapids and one in Pella, is in charge of the new Marshalltown location. Eilers, who is based out of Cedar Rapids, has been a Scooter’s owner for over four years, and he opened the Pella shop in June.

“We are very excited about going to Marshalltown,” Eilers said. “The people I’ve dealt with, with the Chamber and the local businesspeople, have been very helpful and good to talk with.”

Scooter’s has experienced rapid growth in Iowa, with more than a dozen stores now open around the state. Eilers identified Marshalltown as one of the few suitable locations for a new restaurant near his home base in Cedar Rapids.

Huff Contracting of Waterloo is the general contractor on the project, and the Marshalltown location is tentatively set to open in late December.

Supply chain issues affecting other large construction projects have not been an issue for Scooter’s, according to Eilers. He is more concerned about weather delays and the equipment for the inside of the coffee shop arriving on time.

“We tried to lock this stuff up a long time ago before construction started,” he said. “So far, I haven’t been notified that anything is being delayed.”

Generally, Scooter’s is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, but Eilers will cater the hours to the needs of this specific location– some locations close later or open earlier if the customer base demands it.

Eilers is originally from Nebraska but has lived in Iowa for 32 years. He became interested in Scooter’s during a visit to his parents’ home.

“I was reading in the paper about the fifth or sixth location opening in Nebraska,” he said. “I did a little research into the company back then when they were a little smaller. The owners were nice, Midwestern people. The coffee industry is really on an upswing. It’s a pretty positive industry. Generally, the customers and employees are very happy.”

Scooter’s is known for its high quality coffee along with a variety of other drinks including teas and smoothies. All of the classic breakfast items such as biscuits and egg-based products will be available as well as seasonal options such as maple waffle sandwiches.

“The goal of Scooter’s is to have high quality drinks served quickly,” Eilers said. “We have friendly, helpful baristas, and speed of service is something that’s emphasized.”

The first Scooter’s shop started in 1998 with a drive-thru in Bellevue, Neb, and the company has grown to more than 350 stores in 22 states.
