COVID cases down, hospitalizations up ahead of Thanksgiving

Iowa experienced a peak in COVID-19 related hospitalizations the day before Thanksgiving.

The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 623 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 on Wednesday. This is the highest number since Sept. 25, when 650 people were hospitalized.

There have been 109 people admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. There are 146 patients in intensive care and about 26-percent of inpatient hospital beds are available.

People not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 account for more than 75-percent of hospitalizations and 85-percent of ICU cases. Seventy-two percent of patients have COVID-19 as their primary diagnosis.

Iowa’s seven-day rate of positive COVID cases remains more than 10-percent over this week, but Marshall County has increased from 4- to 7-percent. Seventy-three positive tests were reported in the county in the last seven days which is 30 more than a week ago. There have been 560,480 positive cases in Iowa since the start of the pandemic.

Marshall County reported one new death this week, bringing its total to 93 after reporting no new deaths last week. Iowa has reported 7,354 COVID related deaths in total with 86 in the last 24 hours.

Of the 7,354 deaths in Iowa, 54-percent have been people 80 years old or older and 92-percent had pre-existing conditions.

Twenty-two percent of positive tests over the last seven days have come from children 17 or younger, the most of any age group. Adults 18-29 make up 18-percent of new cases and the 30-39 age group is at 17-percent. Adults 80 and older have the smallest number of new cases with 3-percent, followed by 70-79 at 5-percent.

More than 56-percent of Iowans 12 years old or older have been fully vaccinated. More than 71-percent of children 12-17 and more than 68-percent of adults 18 and older are fully vaccinated, including more than 90-percent of people 65 and older.

In Marshall County, more than 59-percent of residents are fully vaccinated. This includes 71-percent of children 12-17, 73-percent of adults 18 and older and 94-percent of adults 65 and older.

In total more than 4.1 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. Pfizer is the vaccine brand most frequently administered with more than 1.9 million doses. IDPH has not reported vaccine doses administered to children 5-11 years old on its website yet.
