Donna Reed to be inducted into Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Donna Reed takes a break on the set of her namesake TV show.

“The Donna Reed Show” originally aired on ABC from 1958 through 1966 and became one of the most popular family sitcoms in television history, thanks in part to its namesake star, who was born 100 years ago in Denison.

Reed passed away in 1986 but will be posthumously inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame during an online ceremony set for 10 a.m. Saturday on the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Facebook page.

To help celebrate, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs’ office of film and media production, known as Produce Iowa, compiled a list of 10 iconic episodes of “The Donna Reed Show” that showcase her talents as an advocate, actor, writer, director and producer during an era when Hollywood reserved most of those jobs for men.

The episodes can be streamed on Hoopla and IMDb TV (on Amazon Prime) – or for free on Tubi TV, Pluto TV and the Roku Channel. Otherwise, true fans can buy the whole series through Google Play Movies and Amazon Video.

1. “Three Part Mother,” 1958 (Season 1, Episode 7) Donna has a problem: How can she watch her son Jeff (Paul Petersen) play basketball, her daughter Mary (Shelley Fabares) join the girl’s club and her husband Alex (Carl Betz) give a speech all at the same time? This was the seventh episode to air but technically the first pilot episode that Reed produced to sell-in the show. The television series lasted eight seasons.

2. “Just a Housewife,” 1960 (S2, E19) Stopped for an interview by a gimmicky showman at a grocery store, Donna stands up for women who say they are “just” a housewife.

3. “The Geisha Girl,” 1961 (S3, E22) At the hospital where her husband works, Donna meets the wife of a new doctor. When Donna discovers it’s an interracial marriage, she decides to nurture the doctor’s Japanese wife into the American way of life.

4. “Mary’s Driving Lesson,” 1961 (S3, E36) Mary asks her boyfriend, Scotty (Jimmy Hawkins), to teach her how to drive. He starts by telling her all about how cars work, what types of cars there are and so on, but Mary just wants to learn how to drive! This episode is a favorite of Fabares, and it reunited Reed with Hawkins, who played a mother and son in the classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

5. “One Starry Night,” 1961 (S4, E1) Mary’s careless driving leads to an unexpected romantic evening with a young pop singer (James Darren), followed by heartbreak when he leaves for the Army. The series took a musical turn in Season 4, and this episode’s catchy tune by teen-idol Darren may just stick in your head all day.

6. “Mouse at Play,” 1961 (S4, E4) Des Moines native Cloris Leachman plays Donna’s friend who complains that her husband is unobservant. When both friends color their hair, to see whether their husbands will notice, viewers get to see two famous Iowans play off each other for laughs – 10 years before Leachman won an Academy Award for “The Last Picture Show.”

7. “Donna’s Prima Donna, 1962 (S4, E20) When Mary considers skipping college to pursue a singing career, Donna is skeptical until she hears Mary sing “Johnny Angel.” Fabares was reluctant to sing, but producer Tony Owen, Reed’s real-life husband, talked her into it. The song premiered during this episode and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

8. “My Dad,” 1962 (S5, E6) Alex and Jeff enter a father-and-son golf tournament, but Alex is called away by a medical emergency. After several attempts to spend time together, it seems the day is lost, but Jeff loves his dad even though he isn’t always around. Fun fact: Petersen, who plays Jeff, spent his early childhood with his parents and older sister on his aunt and uncle’s farm in Cherokee County, Iowa. His younger sister Patty later joined the TV show as his adopted sister Trisha.

9. “The Baby Contest,” 1958 (S1, E11) When Donna gets stuck with organizing a baby beauty contest, Stanton, Iowa, native Virginia Christine stars as the mother of one of the contestants. Christine later became famous as Mrs. Olson in a series of commercials for Folgers Coffee.

10. “The Pioneer Woman,” 1963 (S5, E23) Alex and Jeff wake up early to go camping with their friend Red (Jim Davis). As Donna sees them out the door, Red comments that women are too weak to camp, so Donna and Mary join the trip to prove him wrong. This episode’s cast includes Reed’s real-life son, Tony Owen Jr., as well as Davis, who starred as Jock Ewing on “Dallas,” opposite Reed’s Miss Ellie, during the 1984-1985 season.
