Marshalltown Mayor Joel Greer retained his position in a landslide victory on Tuesday.

The incumbent received 1,858 of the 2,401 votes cast in the mayoral race while his opponent, Serina Stabenow, received 493 votes.

“The only mandate I read in that is (that) Marshalltown truly embraced diversity and progress,” Greer said.

Greer said he was honored to be re-elected but had hoped for a larger voter turnout. Of the 2,401 votes in the mayoral race, 1,858 were cast on Election Day while 543 were absentee votes.

“I hope people realize just how easy it is to vote in advance,” he said.

Even while Greer was awaiting the results in his own race, he was watching the race for the at-large council seats just as intently. Jeff Schneider and Barry Kell won those seats in a contested four-way race.

“I care a lot more about who is on the council than who gets elected mayor. I’ve been promoting getting younger, forward-thinking candidates to get involved,” he said. “That makes me giddy.”

Stabenow could not be immediately reached for comment.
