A man has been arrested and charged with a pair of felonies after a standoff on the 900 block of South 3rd Avenue Tuesday morning.

According to a press release from the Marshalltown Police Department, officers were called to the residence just after 2:30 a.m. to conduct a welfare check on 34-year-old Craig Daniel Maggard, who was reported as "suicidal and armed." When they arrived, he allegedly threatened the officers with a firearm and spoke of "shooting cops."

Crisis negotiators were on the scene, and the standoff lasted until approximately 6:00 a.m. At that time, Maggard was taken into custody, but because of the proximity of his home to the Marshalltown Community School District's administration building (which houses the Marshalltown Learning Academy and Four Oaks Family and Children Services) and Anson Elementary School, classes at both facilities were delayed by two hours.

On Tuesday afternoon, after his medical needs had been addressed, Maggard was taken to the Marshall County Jail and booked on a total of five criminal charges: assault on a police officer while displaying a dangerous weapon (a Class D felony), dominion/control of firearm/offensive weapon by domestic abuse offender -- prohibited person (also a Class D felony), first degree harassment (an aggravated misdemeanor), possession of a controlled substance -- schedule IV and possession of a controlled substance -- schedule I, both serious misdemeanors.

At press time, Maggard was still in custody. The Marshall County Sheriff's Office assisted the MPD in the investigation.
