COVID hospitalizations at record high for 2021

COVID-19 hospitalizations have hit a record high for the year in three consecutive weeks.

There are 823 people hospitalized across the state with COVID-19 infections, including 110 patients admitted in the last 24 hours, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. The total number of hospitalizations is 46 higher than last week, which set the previous record for the year.

Intensive care units across the state are treating 173 COVID patients. There are 140 ICU beds available, and 75 percent of inpatient beds are being used. The 60-69 year-old age group represents the largest portion of hospitalizations at 208 people, or 20 percent of the total. Four percent of patients are 17 years old or younger, and 75 percent of patients have COVID as their primary diagnosis.

More than 77 percent of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 are not fully vaccinated, including 82 percent of ICU patients. Fourteen children 11 years old or younger are hospitalized with COVID. Another five between the ages of 12 and 17 years old are hospitalized, and only one is vaccinated.

The COVID death toll has reached 7,680 in Iowa since the beginning of the pandemic. In the last week, 130 new deaths have been reported. Marshall County did not report any new deaths this week and remains at 94 total. Fifty-three percent of COVID related deaths were people 80 or older, the most of any age group, and 93 percent of people who have died had pre-existing conditions.

The rate of positive COVID tests in Iowa is more than 10 percent on average over the last seven days. In Marshall County, the rate dropped to four percent with 77 new positive cases. The county reported a seven percent average last week.

Nineteen percent of the positive cases in the county this week are in people between the ages of 50 and 59 years old, the most of any age group. Seventeen percent of cases are in children 17 or younger, and 17 percent are in adults between the ages of 18 and 29. The county’s rate of positive tests is 18,951 per 100,000 population.

In the last week, there have been 9,012 positive COVID tests in Iowa. Nineteen percent of the positive cases are in the 18 to 29 age group.

More than 4.4 million doses of COVID vaccines have been administered in Iowa. Sixty-nine percent of adults 18 or older are fully vaccinated, and 73 percent of children 12 and up have received at least one dose. Sixty-one percent of people 12 and older in Marshall County are fully vaccinated. This includes 75 percent of adults 18 and older and 95 percent of adults 65 and older.

The Pfizer vaccine has been the most popular in the state with 2.3 million doses administered. Moderna follows with more than 1.7 million doses. Thirty percent of doses have been given to adults 65 years old or older. More than 82 percent of vaccine recipients are white, while 87 percent are not Hispanic or Latino and 53 percent are female.
