A busy week for the Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD) continued as crews were called to a blaze at 5 E. Webster St. on Wednesday evening.

According to a press release, the fire was reported at 8:36 p.m., and upon arrival, firefighters noticed the entire rear of the two-story single family home was ablaze. Initially, they knocked it down on the back side of the house and extinguished the majority of it in the kitchen, and from there, they ran another hose line through the front door and put out the remainder of the fire.

No civilian or firefighter injuries occurred as a result of the fire, and the residents of the house were not home at the time of the blaze. A total of 18 firefighters were on the scene for approximately five hours until the remaining hotspots were extinguished, and the subzero temperatures made final extinguishment particularly difficult.

The Marshalltown Police Department, Alliant Energy and UnityPoint EMS services all assisted at the scene, and the fire remains under investigation.
