Roof collapses after downtown building fire

The roof and second floor of a vacant building at 110 W. Main St. that formerly housed the Wax Xtatic record store collapsed as the result of a fire late Saturday night.
According to a news release from the Marshalltown Fire Department (MFD), firefighters arrived on the scene at 11:04 p.m. after receiving two calls from the public reporting black smoke and flames coming from the two-story abandoned building and determined that the roof and top floor were ablaze.
The fire made the already structurally unsound building more dangerous, so firefighters opted for a defensive operation, battling it from the ground with handlines and two elevated master streams. The roof collapsed early on in the fire, followed by the second level shortly after that.
The fire did not spread to other buildings, and firefighters remained on the scene for four hours to ensure the building did not reignite. No injuries were reported. MFD is asking the public to avoid driving near the vicinity of West Main Street and First Street, as roads are extremely icy.
MFD was assisted at the scene by UnityPoint EMS and the Marshalltown Police Department (MPD). The fire is currently under investigation, and the MFD plans on providing an update once the investigation is complete.
