No damage reported in Marshall County after tornado

PHOTO BY JESSICA GANNAWAY – A tornado touched down south of Gilman just outside of Marshall County on Saturday night. Within the county, no damages have been reported as a result of the storms so far.

GILMAN — A tornado touched down near the southeast corner of Marshall County on Saturday night, but Emergency Management Coordinator Kim Elder said there have been no damages reported thus far.

According to Elder, the twister actually touched down just south of the Marshall County line between Gilman and Newburg and eventually made its way into Tama County. She had spotters in Laurel, Haverhill, Gilman and Le Grand, and none of them reported any damages. Still, the plan was to conduct surveys in the coming days and further assess the situation.

Tornados touched down across central Iowa on Saturday, with more serious storms making landfall near Winterset and Norwalk and at least seven deaths reported.

In Tama County, no injuries have been reported, but two homes in the area sustained damage.

Residents in Tama and Chelsea reported power outages that lasted well into the night on Saturday. The storm was the second twister Tama County has seen in the past nine months after a category EF-1 tornado swept through the southern city limits of Dysart on July 14.

The wider storm system was the deadliest to hit Iowa in over a decade dating back to the 2008 Parkersburg tornado, when nine people lost their lives.
