MHS goes into brief ‘shelter in place’ order

Marshalltown High School went into a shelter in place situation for approximately five minutes on Wednesday afternoon due to a potential threat to the school, according to district officials.

The order went into effect at approximately 12:25 p.m., and by 12:30, it had been lifted once law enforcement officials notified district leadership that the concern had been addressed.

Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper said the situation involved “ongoing chatter” on social media and students from three different school districts, but he did not believe it had any connection to Tuesday’s shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which left at least 19 students and two teachers dead.

“Everything is fine. Everybody’s safe. There’s no active threats associated with the school district, and we’ve made contact with everyone,” Tupper said. “I can confidently tell you there are no threats to the school. We have no concerns about anything that has happened or will happen, and we’re talking to everybody involved to try to put it together.”

Adam Sodders, the school district’s director of communications, said he did not have any additional comments beyond what was already sent out to parents.

Starting at $4.38/week.
