Marshalltown Sears store among 90 set to close across country

The Sears Hometown store at 507 Iowa Ave. W. is one of 90 across the United States that will be closing in the near future after the decision was announced in a Facebook post last Friday.

Craig Johnson, the franchise owner of the Marshalltown location for the last 10 years, said a variety of factors led up to the closure including the COVID-19 pandemic, product availability and supply chain issues. Sears, once the largest retailer in the country, has seen declining sales numbers over the last several years, and its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018.

According to Johnson, the Marshalltown store, which opened in the fall of 1994, will close “as inventory dictates” but no later than July 14. All customers who have merchandise on order will see those orders fulfilled, and the remaining inventory in the store will be sold at discounted rates.

Including Johnson, there are two full-time employees at the Marshalltown store along with some contract help.

“I appreciate all the support over the years. Anything we can do to help, we’ll do as much as we can,” he said.
