Voting equipment jam triggers recount

The Marshall County Board of Supervisors called an emergency session on Wednesday morning at the election center after some voting equipment jammed while tabulating primary results Tuesday night.

According to County Auditor/Recorder Nan Benson, seven total ballots across five precincts — State Center, Le Grand, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Miller Middle School and the YMCA — were counted twice due to the malfunction, but due to the margins of victory, the outcomes of races will not be affected. Still, she said, it’s important that the OpenElect Voting Optical Scan (OVO) numbers at each precinct are correct.

After a brief discussion, the board voted unanimously to start the process of an administrative recount. Benson reported that the recount had been completed by early Wednesday afternoon, and all duplicate counted ballots have been corrected. The recount did not change the winners of any of the local, statewide or federal races.
