MFD responds to three fires over Fourth weekend

It was a long and busy holiday weekend for the Marshalltown Fire Department as firefighters battled three blazes — one on Saturday night and two more on Monday morning — but according to official releases, no injuries have been reported as a result of the incidents.

A pellet grill helped to cause the structure fire on the 400 block of Swayze Street late Saturday night, according to Fire Chief David Rierson.

When the MFD, Marshalltown Police Department and UnityPoint EMS arrived at the fire site after a call at 10:52 p.m., they saw smoke coming from the garage of a single-story residence. The fire was contained to the garage attached to the house, and all the occupants had evacuated safely by the time emergency responders made it to the scene. No injuries were reported from the incident.

According to Rierson, the homeowner used a pellet grill earlier in the evening and thought he had allowed it enough time to cool before putting it back into the garage. A passerby saw smoke and notified the homeowner. The release noted that total damages were estimated at $5,000.

The next fire was reported along the 1200 block of Fremont Street early Monday morning.

Firefighters arrived at 5:05 a.m., and light smoke was reported as coming from the rear of the residence, with the cause of the fire determined to be improperly discarded smoking material. All occupants were out of the house, and no injuries were reported.

The residents had already extinguished the fire, which was located on the back steps of the house and had damaged some siding, with a garden hose. MFD crews removed additional siding and ventilated the structure, and the total damage from the incident is estimated at $2,500.

The third and final fire, which was reported in the 1100 block of West Church Street at about 9:30 a.m. on Monday, was traced back to a lightning strike.

When the MFD arrived at 9:29 a.m., the officer-in-charge noted light smoke coming from the roof of a two-story home. All occupants were out of the house. The homeowner said she heard a loud “boom” and a flash of light but did not see any smoke inside the house. She added that a neighbor saw the smoke and called to alert her.

An MFD crew made entry and found no smoke on the first or second floors of the residence, but in the attic there was fire burning along the roof rafters and the underside of the roof deck. There was a hole in the roof as well.

After extinguishing the fire, the attic and roof were overhauled and vented to remove smoke from the attic. The MFD found burnt wiring, and Alliant Energy was then called to cut off power to the house. No injuries were reported, and damage was estimated at $4,000.

Starting at $4.38/week.
