New signs pop up around Marshalltown

T-R PHOTO BY ANDREW UBBEN — The new Riverview Park sign welcomes the community on the north side with a fresh look thanks to the city of Marshalltown, Bolton & Menk Inc and Nagle Signs Inc.

In 2018, the city of Marshalltown devised a master plan, which mapped out coordinated sign designs at all municipal levels. It is now being implemented as new signs can be seen throughout the community, notably at Riverview Park, the Marshalltown Police and Fire Department building and the Marshalltown Municipal Airport.

The original sign designs were created by Bolton & Menk, an engineering planning and consulting firm out of Ames, and the production was left to Nagle Signs Inc.

The city’s plan is to install new signs for each city facility that would serve as more of a monument rather than simply a destination label.

“We’re trying to work those into our budget on an annual basis, but the goal is really to have every park and every city facility have some consistent building signage here as we go through the future,” Marshalltown City Administrator Jessica Kinser said.

The city is also working on developing new monumental entrance signs or welcome city signs which incorporate the eye-catching limestone veneer bases and a fresh look for the signs themselves. Currently, there are four monument signs in the works that the city has not started yet as well.

While wayfinding or destination signs in town have traditionally been simply blue and white, they are now being replaced with higher quality signs. All of the wayfinding signs have been replaced except those that are still being installed on the State Street right-of-way. Community members will start to see the new signs on West Lincoln Way from Brentwood Place heading east.

“This has been a project that’s been planned, and we’re now just in the implementation phase which is the exciting phase, and hopefully people are excited as they start to see new things popping up around town,” Kinser said.
