State Center man Thomas Stewart, age 34, was arrested on multiple charges Friday morning following a domestic abuse altercation.
According to Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips, the victim drove to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office to report alleged abuse carried out by Stewart and presented text messages from Stewart saying he was going to set the house on fire at the rural State Center address.
Stewart allegedly threatened to kill the victim and was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun that he pointed at several different individuals during the incident.
Phillips said that when deputies were dispatched to the State Center home, they received no answer when knocking on the front door, but with the assistance of the Story County Sheriff’s Office, they later found Stewart hiding in a wooded area near the residence. In addition to deputies, ambulance services and fire trucks were also dispatched because Stewart had threatened to set the home on fire.
Phillips said Stewart was taken into custody without incident, and he was charged with domestic abuse and assault, a serious misdemeanor, first degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor, domestic abuse while displaying or using a weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor, four counts of child endangerment, all of which are aggravated misdemeanors and the illegal possession of a firearm, a Class D felony.
Court documents show that Stewart’s bond was set for $25,000, and a preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 15 at 1 p.m. According to the Marshall County Jail inmate roster website, Stewart was still in custody as of Monday afternoon.
