Many accidents, no injuries after storm in Marshall County

The recent winter storm across the Midwest, now known as Elliott, made travel especially dangerous over the last week, and while there were plenty of accidents within Marshall County as a result of the conditions, Sheriff Joel Phillips and Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper did not report any injuries.

On Friday afternoon, Phillips said the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office had already dealt with a whopping 46 calls for service — 32 disabled vehicles and 14 accidents — since the storm started, and county road crews made the decision to pull plows at 4 p.m. due to the conditions before sending them back out early Saturday morning.

With more snow hitting the ground on Monday, the MCSO covered 35 accidents with property damage only and no injuries along with 11 disabled vehicles caused by either leaving the roadway or getting stuck due to the conditions. Phillips said speed was “a major factor” in the accidents.

“It was a mess yesterday,” Phillips said on Tuesday.

By contrast, things were relatively quiet within the city of Marshalltown as Tupper had not reported any accidents as of Friday after the first wave of snow and wind had hit. Tupper added that the MPD investigated five accidents with property damage only on Monday, but he could not say for sure if they were snow related.
