The Marshalltown Police Department has provided an update on a fatal shooting at 607 E. Church St. that occurred Wednesday afternoon, with preliminary indications pointing to a murder-suicide involving an estranged married couple who had been living separately.

Hermelinda Alcala-de-Villagomez, age 57, was pronounced dead at the scene Wednesday after suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, and 72-year-old Jose Carmen Villagomez-Torres was transported to a Des Moines hospital with life-threatening injuries. He has since died.

“Preliminary investigative details indicate that Jose Carmen Villagomez-Torres shot Hermelinda Alcala-de-Villagomez and then shot himself. It is important to note that these are preliminary details and the investigation is not completed,” the release read.

The investigation of the incident is ongoing, and no threat is believed to exist to the general public.
