Wound Healing Center earns 3 prestigious awards

The UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown Wound Healing Center is no stranger to awards for impeccable work, and on Thursday, the facility received even more.

Healogics, a national provider of advanced wound care, recognized the Marshalltown center with three Quality Performance awards, all earned in 2022:

• Center of Distinction -- for outstanding outcomes last year with a healing rate of 98 percent, 21 days of healing time and 95 percent patient satisfaction rate.

• Center of Excellence -- for maintaining the Center of Distinction requirements, but also scoring in the top 10 percent of centers with a 93 percent healing rate while the average rate is 80 percent.

• President's Circle Award -- only given to the top 5 percent of centers. This award is given to the "best of the best."

Tia Bacon, program director for the Wound Healing Center, said those three awards were the reason for the celebration at the new facility. Roughly 40 people attended.

"This is the fifth year in a row we have gotten the President's Circle Award," she said.

Chanda Bovenmyer, managing vice president of operations for Healogics, presented the awards to Bacon and the Wound Healing Center staff. She told the crowd the awards are meant to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and accomplishments of staff in a manner which exceeds other centers.

"This center's outstanding clinical outcomes stem from a passionate team that is dedicated to putting patient care at the forefront to heal more wounds, and change more lives for the patients of your community," Bovenmyer said.

The reason behind the center's success, Bacon said, is patients are treated as a whole, rather than just the wounds.

"We identify what the underlying problem of the wound is. Wounds aren't normal, and so we go above and beyond to identify why they have the wound," she said. "We go out of our way to establish care with other surgeons."

The center has already received an award in 2023 – the Quarter One Comprehensive Heal Rate. Bacon said that award means the Wound Healing Center has the highest heal rate in the Northwest One Division -- which encompasses the entire nation west of the Mississippi River. She was personally very excited for the latest award.

"We got the award for our comprehensive heal rate which is super high," Bacon said. "Our comprehensive healing rate is 93 percent. That means 93 percent of our patients, no matter what, are healing."

When taken into consideration the center has 120 active patients every month, and 350 new patients each year, the rate is significant.

But the award season might not be over for the Wound Healing Center for 2023. Bacon has a goal of the facility earning the Divisional Center of the Year.
