A Marshalltown man wanted for violating the conditions of his parole and escaping the Marshalltown Residential Facility has been arrested after a two-hour standoff with police on West Church Street Thursday afternoon.

At 3:16 p.m., officers from the Marshalltown Police Department went to 208 W. Church St. to search for Jimmy Allen Austgen, 54, of Marshalltown, who had warrants for his arrest for parole violation and escape after walking away from the Marshalltown Residential Facility on June 6. According to an MPD press release, Austgen is well known to law enforcement and has been arrested multiple times for offenses generally related to theft and burglary crimes. He was also being investigated in connection with a new theft crime as of June 8.

The officers located Austgen at the residence, but he locked himself inside a bathroom and refused commands to surrender, allegedly warning officers multiple times not to enter the room.

At 5:21 p.m., Austgen was safely taken into custody after two hours of active negotiations to secure his surrender. He was transported to the Marshall County Jail and is being held pending an initial court appearance while the investigation continues.

“I am proud of the professionalism and perseverance our law enforcement team displayed during this investigation. Mr. Austgen’s actions placed himself, the officers, and other occupants of this apartment building in danger,” Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper said. “Thanks to exceptional training and teamwork, Mr. Austgen was safely arrested. Mr. Austgen has a lengthy criminal history. We are pleased to have him back in custody.”
