MEMBERS1ST breaks ground at new location

T-R PHOTO BY LANA BRADSTREAM — MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union employees throw some dirt during a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning at the new branch location, which should open in the spring of 2024.

MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union broke ground Wednesday morning at the credit union’s newest branch being constructed in Marshalltown at 104 W. Anson St. The location is adjacent to Fareway.

“This is an exciting day for MEMBERS1st,” CEO Nick Tonelli said. “This event represents our commitment to the community of Marshalltown and our membership.”

In addition to Tonelli, also participating in groundbreaking were retired MEMBERS1st CEO Janet Borer, Board President Tami Lichtenberg, past and present board members, most of the Marshalltown area MEMBERS1st team members and key representatives from the Iowa Credit Union League and community of Marshalltown.

“This isn’t just a building for MEMBERS1st,” Lichtenberg said. “This is a commitment to the future, prosperity, and financial freedom of this community, and all of the communities we serve. We are here for you, because of you, and we are so happy to see all of the planning and dreaming become reality.”

Scheduled to open in the spring of 2024, the 10,000 square-foot full-service branch and administrative facility will utilize state-of the-art technology. Tonelli said they will be able to deliver in-person banking services, such as biometric access to safe deposit boxes and Interactive Teller Machines for self-service or assisted cash services. The center will enable the credit union to enlarge phone, digital and video banking services, and will offer expanded support for Spanish-speaking members. A gathering space will be available for lunch-and-learn events and classes related to consumer topics and financial wellness.

Thirty staff will work at the new location. It will include a full-service branch, drive-thru services, administrative space, a member contact center and a community meeting space. Tenant space will allow for complimentary services to credit union members.

“Our team members will be able to focus on what’s most important – the financial well-being and financial goals of our membership,” Tonelli said. “It is my pleasure to be a part of the vision and future of MEMBERS1st Community Credit Union and our mission of financially empowering central Iowa.”

MEMBERS1st opened its doors in Marshalltown as Fisher Credit Union in 1964 and continued as Central Iowa Credit Union, before becoming MEMBERS1st. In 2019, a branch inside the JBS plant was opened to offer on-site financial services and education to the workforce. Additionally, MEMBERS1st has begun an in-depth process to assess and address the specific needs of the Hispanic community to provide the best service experience to this growing population.
