MPD releases two videos of May 20 accident

On Wednesday, Marshalltown Police Department publicly released Officer David Danielson’s dashcam footage along with a video from a neighbor as part of the department’s investigation into a May 20 accident when Danielson struck a 4-year-old while on patrol near the intersection of Woodbury Street and North 12th Avenue.

The boy, Maximiliano Saravia, suffered a broken ankle after running into the street and colliding with Danielson’s vehicle. Danielson was attempting to navigate around an ice cream truck.

“The video footage clearly depicts an unavoidable accident. Officer Danielson was carefully operating his police vehicle on May 20. What occurred is unfortunate, but Officer Danielson did nothing wrong. It was an accident, pure and simple,” Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper said. “Officer Danielson quickly stopped his vehicle and immediately summoned emergency medical care for the child. We continue to keep the child and his family in our prayers and we hope for a speedy recovery.”

The Iowa State Patrol is assisting the MPD with an analysis of the police vehicle black box data. The investigation will remain active until the black box data is available. Danielson has been a Marshalltown police officer for 16 years and works as uniformed patrol.

Both videos can be viewed on the MPD Facebook page. An attempt to reach Saravia’s mother for immediate comment was unsuccessful.
