Tama mayor resigns from office

Ray

TAMA — Late last week, Tama Mayor Doug Ray submitted his resignation. Ray only had a few months left in his term.

The now former Mayor is believed to have resigned due to a dissent, but no one has officially gone on record as to the formal reason for Ray’s resignation. When asked about his departure, Tama City Clerk Jill Apfel stated that he didn’t say in his letter of resignation, that she did not know of any problems, and that “you’d have to ask him” for the reason.

Ray has been the mayor for several years, guiding the community through a derecho, a worldwide pandemic, and the recent closure of Tama Paperboard, where he worked as an employee for decades before retiring.

At Monday’s Tama city council meeting, Ray’s resignation was accepted and made official. The council also thanked him for his service to the city. Brian Hanus has stepped in as Tama mayor pro tem.

Starting at $4.38/week.
