Back for the third year, the annual Draws For Paws bar crawl raises money for the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown, plus gives people the chance to hang out with friends and patronize local businesses.
Coordinator Peggy Hannam, who is also an ARL board member, said she always receives positive feedback.
"It's really a community event, too," she said. "Plus, there are people along the way that just give us donations as the day goes."
From noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, registered participants can stop at any and all participating businesses on the crawl for food and drinks. These establishments will be offering drink specials that will benefit the ARL. At 6 p.m., head to the Old Timer Tavern to drop off your completed punch card for the chance to win prizes. New this year, also at that time and place, there will be pork burgers, sandwiches and chips for $7.
From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Bon Jecci will perform.
"We have nine businesses this year, and last year we had 12. We cut it back because you just couldn't get through it all and we want people to stay a little longer at each location and patronize them," Hannam added.
Participation at the $40 level will get you a punch card and lilac t-shirt. The Ultimate Giver Level costs $70 and will get you a punch card and magenta pink t-shirt. Those who register now are not guaranteed their t-shirt will be ready by the time the event starts, but they will receive one. If your shirt is not ready, you can pick it up during visiting hours the following week at the ARL of Marshalltown.
Pick up your punch card and t-shirt at one of the following times: Early Bird on Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Legends, and day of from 10 a.m. to noon, also at Legends. Available for purchases will be jewelry donated by Nina's Attic and Slap Wrap can coolers.
The following businesses have provided sponsorship of the event: Banker's Advertising, The Brodin Team Premier Real Estate, Doll Distributing, H & F Distributing, Karl Auto Group Marshalltown – Megan Mohon, Minuteman, Nina's Attic, Shear Satisfaction – Tawnya Fisher, Structural Engineers and Hy-Vee.
Last year's Draws For Paws brought in $17,000. This year's goal is to surpass that at $20,000.
Money raised from sponsors, participating businesses and event registration will go to support the ARL's general fund.
"We pay for food, surgery and medications. We need five new furnaces -- there are seven in our building. We need to update our electronics. We're constantly out of cat food and dog food. It's more than just paying an electrical bill," Hannam said of the expenses.
Being a non-profit, she added, requires support from the community, and the ARL is lucky to have it.
"We're helping those that can't help themselves, so we rely on people to help us out. We have a lot of wonderful support in Marshalltown and the surrounding area. And there are awesome people that the ARL."
