Annual Meskwaki Powwow underway

After the crowning of Princess Jayci (Ma ta yo) Bear and Brave Maheengunse (Kekinatosatea) Bear on Wednesday night, the 107th Meskwaki Powwow, a celebration of the tribe’s traditions and culture, kicked off in earnest Thursday with the first grand entry and dances, including Tenoch Snow and Brave Keki Bear performing “The Hunt,” that mark the beginning of the four-day event held around the Powwow Grounds near the intersection with Tama County Highway E49. The Powwow is open to the public and will run until Sunday, with grand entries and dances at 1 and 7 p.m. and a host of food vendors and special activities.
