Because We Care event set for Aug. 26

An event to raise money for the Marshalltown Community School District will be held Saturday, Aug. 26.

Beginning at 10 a.m. at the Marshalltown Arts and Civic Center, Because We Care Carnival Fair will feature inflatables, face painting, food trucks, carnival games and live music.

It is organized by Unity in Our Community, of which Cindy Soderberg and Lanette Martin are members. Soderberg said four Marshalltown churches came together to form the committee, and they have contacted numerous other churches to be a part of the event.

There is no charge to attend. However, the activities will require tickets, and each ticket costs $1.

As a retired Marshalltown school teacher, Soderberg said there is a definite need.

“All proceeds will go to schools,” she said. “The nurses are our contact people. They know the needs. I know there have been numerous drives already, which is wonderful, but I also know from being an elementary teacher, that midway through the year, there are tremendous needs.”

Martin agreed, saying she was previously in communication with Miller Middle School, and the number one need they have is hygiene products.

“I know some of the schools have pantries, so if we need to fill the pantries up, that is what we will do,” she said. “Last year I was in contact with someone from the school district, it was clothing. He said they had a lot of school supplies and did not need that. This year, we thought a better route would be to go to each school individually and see what they need. The idea is to purchase the things for the school. It’s one less thing they have to do, and we know what we raised is going for the needs we are trying to fill.”

Soderberg said they have been advertising and getting the word out about the event.

“We’re hoping to get the community excited about this,” she said. “This type of activity was done last summer. It was one church who put it on by themselves. So, we’re wanting to expand that and draw more churches into the activity.”

Martin said the food trucks at Because We Care include Appleberry Farm, Funky Pepperoni, Taco LaCruz, Quick & Fresh Kitchen and Family Fun Concessions.

“I’m really excited about the food trucks that responded,” she said. “I’m excited about the variety we will have. It’s something different.”

Martin said the event will have DJ Alex Rios and Zach and Ruby Hoover will do worship segments.

“We are hoping for at least 500 people,” Martin said.
