Although a delay in ordering ballots pushed back the start of the absentee voting period for the upcoming Marshalltown city special election, it will officially begin today, according to Jessie Chizek of the Marshall County Auditor/Recorder's Office.
As the deadline to request a mailed ballot passed last night at 5 p.m., those ballots will be sent out to voters who requested them once the order arrives. This morning at 8 a.m., in-person absentee voting utilizing the Freedom Vote tablet system begins at the Auditor's counter on the northeast corner of the third floor of the Marshall County Courthouse, and a small number of paper ballots for those who prefer that method of casting a ballot.
Voters living within the city of Marshalltown will be asked to decide whether or not to implement a five percent franchise fee on gas and electric bills, and those in the Third Ward, which generally covers the southwest quadrant of the city, will have the opportunity to vote on a city council vacancy. Chris Bennett and Greg Nichols are the two declared candidates for the seat, and they will be vying to replace Dex Walker, who resigned in July.
In somewhat related election news, the filing period for the city/school general elections across Marshall County set for Nov. 7 began Monday, and it will run until Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. To learn more about what will be on the ballot come November, check with city and school district officials or call the Marshall County Auditor/Recorder's Office at (641) 754-6323.
