One Love offers free back-to-school haircuts

Parents of young Marshalltown residents with heads full of wild summer hair can take their children to get a free back-to-school cut.

Nancy Avila, owner of the downtown One Love Barbershop, will provide the cuts during the Trucks and Tacos Back To School event. It begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday and lasts until 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the First Methodist Church.

“This is just for cuts,” she said. “This is the second year, and we’ve partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I just want to give back to the community. I remember going to the House of Compassion for school supplies, and now I can give back.”

Avila is expecting less than 100 children to line up for updated snips.

“It’s kind of hit or miss,” she said. “It depends on how it goes, but I am hoping for a good turnout.”

The barbershop owner hopes to make the free back-to-school cuts an annual event. However, since she is only one person, she is looking for some help on Saturday. Avila said interested volunteers can call her at 641-750-7878.

“Stylists, barbers, anyone willing to help out, please let me know,” she said.

If children are not able to get their hair chopped before the event ends, Avila said their parents will be given vouchers for free cuts later.

In addition to free haircuts, the event will also feature:

• The Marshalltown Public Library Bookmobile;

• Food and drinks;

• Trucks and cars;

• Vaccination information and;

• Community resource information.
