A Marshalltown man has been charged with a total of seven criminal counts connected to an April shooting in the 300 block of West Linn Street.
On Friday at 3:06 p.m., the Marshalltown Police Department arrested Jaycob Jonniel Perez, age 18, and took him in for processing before he was transported to the Marshall County Jail.
Perez was arrested in connection with a shooting investigation that began on April 3, when MPD officers were dispatched to the aforementioned area to investigate a disturbance. Upon arrival, they discovered gunshots had been fired at the scene during a fight that broke out.
Perez has been charged with four counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, first degree burglary, reckless use of a firearm causing bodily injury and fourth degree criminal mischief.
“I am proud of the extensive police work our police officers and detectives put into this investigation. This is an example of senseless violence that could have resulted in tragedy. What made this investigation even more concerning is that it involved several young people who continue to wander down a disturbing and dangerous path of violence,” Police Chief Mike Tupper said. “We remain concerned about a small group of juveniles and young adults who are more frequently turning to guns and violence to settle petty disputes. This is a dangerous game that we cannot and will not tolerate in this community. I strongly urge all parents to talk to their sons and daughters about gun violence and the need to walk away from dangerous people and situations.”
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Marshalltown Police Department at 641.754.5729. Tips may also be submitted anonymously by calling Marshall County Crime Stoppers at 641.753.1234 or via text by texting the word “marshall” followed by the tip to CRIMES (274637). The MPD has been assisted in this investigation by the Marshall County 911 Communications Center and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.
