Assault on officer, high-speed chase results in arrest

Bru

A high-speed chase and assault on an officer resulted in Eric David Bru, 50, of Gilman, being arrested Wednesday night after causing a disturbance at Unity Point Hospital.

The Marshalltown Police Department received a report of an intoxicated man assaulting someone in the emergency department. Upon arrival, an officer attempted to make an arrest. Bru resisted, assaulted the officer and also attempted to disarm the officer of his electronic control device.

Bru then ran out of the hospital and left the scene in a motor vehicle with law enforcement in pursuit. He was stopped on Highway T38 N and 107th Avenue East in Jasper County after a high-speed chase through Marshall County and into Jasper County. The pursuit exceeded 100 miles per hour.

“I am relieved nobody was hurt during this incident,” said Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper. “The reckless actions of this criminal defendant endangered the lives of multiple law enforcement officers and the general public. Through the courage and professionalism of the responding law enforcement professionals, Mr. Bru was captured and will have his opportunity in court to face these serious charges. I am thankful for the officers and 911 operators involved in this incident. They work tirelessly each day to keep our community safe and they did an excellent job resolving this dangerous situation.”

Bru was taken to the Marshall County Jail and has been charged with first offense OWI, eluding, attempting to disarm a peace officer, assault on a peace officer, interference with official acts, failure to yield, two counts of speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road. The charges are only accusations and Bru is considered innocent until proven guilty.

The MPD was assisted by the Marshall County 911 Communications Center and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.
