New salon opens on Center Street

T-R PHOTO BY LANA BRADSTREAM — Janet Madrigal Manzo stands next to the entrance of her new salon, Nane’s Hair, Nails & Lashes. The business opened for the first time on Monday in its Center Street location.

Monday was a special day for Janet Madrigal Manzo. Not only was it her 30th birthday, but she also opened the doors of her new salon, Nane’s Hair, Nails & Lashes.

Madrigal Manzo took the leap of opening her own business after four years of renting chair spaces in other Marshalltown salons. She started her career at JC Penney’s, then moved to Asparations, Marla’s Headliners, Arte Salon and Studio M.

“A lot of people asked me if I was thinking of opening a salon,” she said. “Not really. I just knew I needed more space. I do lash extensions. I do hair. I do nails, and I want to keep growing and doing more things.”

Madrigal Manzo imagined working on hairstyles for runways and creating beauty when she started school, but discovered she liked the hustle that went with industry.

“It’s very challenging,” she said. “I like the hustle where you can work all day. You can come in the morning and work on your clients. You can go home and still think of ideas. You’re on social media. It’s nonstop. It’s a life thing, a daily thing. You have to get up early. You have to do things that are not easy. When you want to give up, you can’t because you’re running this thing.”

The desire for expansion led Madrigal Manzo into seeking out a commercial space that would be suitable for her needs. She found it in the strip mall at 2007 S. Center St., and has already started scheduling appointments.

In addition to standard services for hair, nails and lashes, other offerings at Nane’s include haircuts for men and children, body and face waxing, acrylic nails, lash extensions and a specialized hair treatment – Brazilian blowouts. A Brazilian blowout is a semi-permanent treatment using keratin, which smooths hair out. Madrigal said the blowout is great to combat frizziness and achieves a little bit of straightening in hair.

“A lot of clients have been asking for it,” she said. “They haven’t been able to find it anywhere, so I am excited to offer something new to town.”

In four months spring will begin to arrive and some teenage girls will start considering the hairstyles which will go with their prom dress. Nane’s will have services for the prom goers. Madrigal Manzo said not only do they create updos, but also do makeup, as well. It is just a piece of offering everything possible.

“Me and the girls have been thinking about other things they want to do, and I want to do, as well,” Madrigal Manzo said. “We’re excited to learn from each other.”

Eventually, she said facials will be offered at Nane’s, but that is down the road. When the time comes, customers will also be able to get pedicures.

“I want to help other girls in this industry who want to do it all, as well, and not feel limited,” Madrigal Manzo said.

She has a part-time lash artist and two more hair stylists will start working at Nane’s in December. The last artist, Madrigal Manzo said, will help make eyelashes longer, curlier and fluffier. Unlike the fake lashes purchased in stores in which the entire row of lashes is glued, the lashes at Nane’s are attached to each eyelash.

“It takes a lot of separation, and can take two or three hours to apply,” she said.

While Madrigal Manzo is ready and excited to go, she said the entire process of opening her own business has been a bit of a shock for herself and her family.

“They said, ‘We didn’t know this was in the plans. We know you have a passion for what you do,'” she said. “I told them I guess passion dragged me into doing this. I think it’s time.”
