Fundraising for Marshall County Veterans Memorial taking shape

Marshall County Veteran Affairs Executive Director Kevin Huseboe has put his thoughts into action. Over the last few months, his idea to have a veterans memorial on the courthouse grounds has evolved into a conceptual design, and fundraising for the project has begun. The design team consists of Vic Hellberg, Mike Hanken, Randy Kessler and Deb Millizer.
The county has granted permission for the memorial to be placed on the southwest lawn of the courthouse grounds. Mechdyne provided an artistic rendition. Local contractors will be utilized for construction, from site work to electrical.
The design team toured some Veteran memorial displays for ideas, and has come up with a one-of-a-kind design, with a focal point being an eight foot tall granite post with a 36" eagle on top. The military branches will wrap around the center post in a barber pole wrap, beginning with Flanders Field WWI, and using memorials from D.C.
Open areas will be decorated with poppies. There will be three flag poles on the north side. The granite post will be located on a 20' round slab, with three park benches.
The project is estimated to cost $150,000. Individuals interested in contributing to it should make their checks payable to "Marshall Co. Veterans Affairs" and write "VA Memorial Project" in the memo. Mail checks to Marshall Co Veteran Affairs, 101 E. Main St., Marshalltown, IA, 50158. Donations over $500 will receive a tax receipt.
