North Third Street is gloomy and empty, except for one lone resident walking toward Elim Lutheran Church during the mid-morning hours of Tuesday. The bulk of the snow fell on Marshalltown overnight, and continued through the morning.
Who said only humans can have fun in the snow? Emilee Johnson’s dog, Cleo, was quick to steal a carrot intended to be used for a snowman’s nose. The carrot did not survive.

Marshalltown received the first snow of the year in a big way Tuesday. At least 8 inches of snow descended, causing some businesses to close for the day and area school districts to cancel classes. Snow fell through most of the morning, but cleared up in the afternoon -- leading to work for some residents, and fun for others. The wind picked later in the day, creating some hazardous driving conditions.
