GILMAN -- Residents of the East Marshall Community School District are invited to attend upcoming information meetings to learn more about the Physical Plant & Equipment Levy (PPEL) renewal that will be on the ballot Tuesday, March 5.
The first meeting will take place Saturday, Feb. 24, at East Marshall High School, beginning at 9 a.m. The second meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 27 at East Marshall High School at 6:30 p.m.
District administrators will be available to provide information and answer questions about PPEL, which is a voter-approved levy that generates funds a school district can only use for infrastructure and equipment repairs, purchases, and improvements.
"We hope our community members will take advantage of these opportunities to learn more about how the voted PPEL has supported our schools for many years," said Superintendent Anthony Ryan.
A voted PPEL must be renewed every 10 years in order for East Marshall CSD to access these funds, which have been used in the past for roof repairs, technology purchases, school bus replacements, and other facility needs. If the measure is approved March 5, the PPEL would be extended through 2035 at the current rate of $0.67 per $1,000 of taxable property value. A renewed PPEL will not raise property taxes.
More than 83% of Iowa school districts had a voter-approved PPEL in place during the recent fiscal year. More information about the ways a voted PPEL supports East Marshall can be found at https://www.eastmarshallppel.org.
In-person early absentee voting is available until Monday, March 4 at the County Auditor's Office during regular business hours. The polls will be open on election day (March 5) from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters are required to show a valid ID before casting a ballot.
Due to the lower volume of East Marshall CSD voters in Jasper County, the Marshall County Auditor's Office has been designated as the control county and administrator of the special election. East Marshall CSD residents in Jasper County will vote at the Laurel City Hall (102 N. Main Street, Laurel) on March 5.
