STATE CENTER — Dozens of State Center area residents attended Saturday’s first ever “Coffee with a Cop” at city hall and hosted by the State Center Police Department.

They were treated to coffee, doughnuts and more from local business Starry Grove Sweet Treats. Attendees of all ages had a chance to talk with SCPD chief Jon Thomas and one of his colleagues from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The purpose of the event was to allow area residents to become acquainted with SCPD staff in a comfortable, informal setting.

Thomas and his officers said they were extremely pleased with the turnout and expect to hold future “Coffee with a Cop” events.

Attendees also had their photo taken with Marshall County Deputy Tanner Hunt and K-9 Bosco.

Several youths were drawn to the dog, who sat dutifully during the impromptu photo sessions.

“They are here to see Bosco,” joked Hunt, while sitting at a table with residents and SCPD officers.

With the captive audience, SCPD Officer Meredith Clark promoted the $500 SCPOA Scholarship program.

It is open to West Marshall High School students graduating in 2024 who have plans for careers in EMS, fire services or law enforcement.

Applicants are required to submit an essay describing how one’s career would serve the community in the future. The application should include their name, email and cell/telephone number. To apply, contact jwestendorf@statecenterpolice.org. The deadline is April 2, 2024.

An added attraction were members of local Girl Scout Troop 22 selling a wide variety of the iconic cookies.

They were doing a brisk business, while co-troop leaders Libby Bowan and Yanna Griffith, both of State Center, looked on with volunteers.

A portion of profits is returned to the troop and helps fund troop activities.

State Center Mayor Craig Pfantz, while on his way to buy Girl Scout cookies, said he too, was pleased with the turnout. For more information, contact 641-483-2107 or email jthomas@statecenterpolice.org.
