Mobile speed camera to be set up in school zones, complaint areas
CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The Marshalltown Police Department has announced that a mobile speed camera, pictured, will be placed in school zones and high complaint areas around the community beginning this week.
Beginning this week, a speed camera will be placed in a school zone or high-complaint area of town, weather permitting. Each week, the Marshalltown Police Department will announce via social media the location of the mobile speed camera so residents are aware of the location.
Citations will be issued if vehicles are captured by the camera exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more.
The mobile speed camera is part of an Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) program approved by the Marshalltown City Council in 2022 and implemented in 2023.
In a press release, the MPD said that the goals of the camera are to encourage drivers to obey the posted speed limits, reduce crashes and enhance safety in neighborhoods. Speeding is a significant problem in Marshalltown and is frequently complained about to the police department.
