Jail inmate charged with attempted murder over alleged shanking

Lang

An inmate at the Marshall County Jail who was already being held for two counts of first degree burglary and a litany of other offenses now faces more charges including attempted murder after allegedly attempting to shank a fellow inmate on April 14.

Jerome Marquez Lang, 22, of Marshalltown, was charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony, possession of a weapon in a correctional institution, a Class C felony, going armed with intent, a Class D felony, and first degree harassment and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon on Monday.

According to a criminal complaint, Lang “unlawfully and intentionally attempted to cause the death of the victim by cutting the victim’s throat.”

“The defendant cut horizontally across the front and side of the victims neck near the carotid artery with a razor blade, which could cause or likely result in the death of the victim,” it continues. “The defendant threatened to kill the victim while displaying the weapon the day before the above listed incident. The victim suffered from lacerations and pain on his neck.”

The weapon, a toothbrush sharpened down to a point on one end with a single razor blade attached to it, is commonly referred to as a shank. Court hearings and trial dates have not yet been set in connection with the latest round of charges. Lang is scheduled to face a jury trial related to the alleged burglary from last summer beginning on May 20.
