CONTRIBUTED PHOTO — The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a blaze in the ITC transformer yard on Friday morning. No injuries or power outages were reported.
The Marshalltown Fire Department was dispatched to a fire in the ITC Marshalltown transformer yard at about 7:30 a.m. Friday morning, but no injuries or power outages were reported as a result.
According to a press release from the MFD, firefighters arrived at the facility, located northeast of the Alliant Marshalltown Generating Station, and found a small fire burning on the top of a large transformer inside the yard complex.
“Representatives from ITC worked quickly to isolate power from a portion of the yard so that fire department resources could be deployed,” the release reads.
Once the scene was secured and suppression equipment staged, the transformer equipment was cooled with Class B foam from a remote ground monitor. Firefighters were able to remotely monitor the temperature of the electrical equipment using a drone mounted FLIR (infrared camera).
Once the equipment was cooled to the satisfaction of the ITC staff, all fire department resources returned to service. According to electrical staff, no customers to their knowledge experienced a power outage as a result of the incident.
MFD units were at the scene for approximately 4 ½ hours, and there were no injuries sustained during the course of the incident.
